Ohio University - Greenhouse Gas Inventory Seminar

 

Objectives: This service-learning Environmental Studies course was designed with two goals:

     1) To support Ohio University's Greenhouse Gas Inventory, which is being conducted

          in support of the March 2007 signing of the President's Climate Commitment,

 

        Additionally, OU's GHG Inventory responds to two initiatives in Ohio:

          * Ohio Governor Strickland's Executive Order 2007 – 02S and

          * Ohio House Bill 251 (both are energy conservation mandates for OH public sector).

 

     2) To provide OU's students with a hands-on learning opportunity to help a large

          institution collect, analyze and present energy useage data (a marketable skill).

 

Approach: Data collection and analysis for the Campus Carbon Calculator

       *  Students, working singly or in groups, volunteered to obtain data from various sectors across

           campus for input into the Campus Carbon Calculator (CCC), a detailed Excel file that is being used by

           many of the 420+ institutions that have signed the President's Climate Commitment

       * Meta-data on data sources, data quality, and analysis are being logged on the OU GHG Inventory Blog

       * Vetted data are then entered into the master CCC excel file by personnel in the OU Energy Director's

           office, in order to centralize the inventory data.
